With a band and album name like this, one could be forgiven for thinking that maybe this is some DSBM. Nope. This is actually some crust punk-infused death metal. It's not unusual for me to get some black metal/crust punk hybrid in my promo stack, but death metal? Not so much. This is a pretty cool album that's not lacking in terms of heavy, muddy, dark death metal, but adding the crust punk elements in here make it quite a bit more catchy and "rocking" than in would otherwise be. The vocals are deep growls that are surprisingly memorable, so much so than one may be tempted to "growl along." It's mostly fast music here, but not crazy fast, more along the lines of thrash than some of the insanely fast death metal we are often served with these days. If you're tired of bands that just stick to playing old-school death metal, then Self // Wound is certainly worth checking out as it certainly sticks out in the crowded death metal scene. |
