Somewhat raw and creepy black metal here, often just plodding along with a kind of "flat" tone that's surprisingly effective. Some songs remind me of some early lo-fi black metal from 30-some years ago, with evil-sounding rasps that are often a bit low in the mix, leaving the non-flashy, basic black metal music do its deed. Catching the listener off guard, there are songs that are much more melodic and atmospheric and, well, almost catchy (at least compared to how they set the table early on in the album). It's still pretty raw stuff devoid of anything especially flashy, polished or what have you, but there's more life to it and it's not as creepy and just kind of fun, really. Some clean or clean-ish vocals sound a little out of place, but aren't really a turn-off. Krijtland is a nice slab of mostly barebones black metal with a twist. One of those albums that sets itself a little apart from the crowd. |
