It was kind of surprising to see Mütiilation release a new studio album so long after 2007's Sorrow Galaxies, even more so considering I got the promo on the day of release. It's like waking up from a nap and having this weird feeling that you overslept and missed something. If you've been missing some authentic, cold and raw black metal from the mid-90s when the French Black Legions were terrorizing the unsuspecting ears, you can rejoice. Other than sounding somewhat cleaner than back in the day, musically it's almost like Mütiilation was frozen in time. Raw, dark, malevolent, cacophonic at times, with those signature tortured, creepy vocals, Black Metal Cult does its name proud. Largely devoid of anything to attract the more artsy black metal aficionados, the album is like a nightmare that you don't mind having over and over if your thing is the rawest of black metal. Since the heydays of the band, we've of course seen bands that can give them a run for their money in the genre, but this legendary band shows that it can still deliver the goods, much to your neighbours' displeasure.
