I can't recall hearing Great Master before their sixth album, Montecristo, hit my review queue but it didn't take long after a started it for the first time to think, "this band is playing Italian neo-classical power metal." Lo and behold, a quick check of Metal Archives confirmed Great Master hails from the area around Venice. Rhapsody of Fire is the obvious reference point though I find Great Master to be a little heavier and more direct and less "flowery," so perhaps a healthy dose of Serenity makes the analogy a little more accurate. Montecristo is a concept album (naturally) and is well played, grandiose, catchy, etc., all the things you expect from a power metal album. It doesn't break any long-standing rules, but if you live and breathe melodic power metal, you're sure to find plenty to like. |
