See-sawing between EPs and splits is Philadelphia's black/thrash miscreants Bastard Cröss. Beasts of the Night is their second EP of speed metal evil and features four songs designed to take your head off. The vocals this time around are more to the black side, a spiteful, rasping bellow, while the riffs are thrashier and, though they are not far removed from the chaotic style of the very early second wave of black metal, they retain a lot of the melody of thrash. I personally like "Whores and Hexes" and "Fükkin' Maniac" because they are on the melodic side yet still have the ferocity of a wolverine in a blender. "Nocturnal Ecstasy" and the title track lean more into black territory but are still enjoyably loud and abusive. There's no innovation here, but as I've said about black/thrash before, that's not what this genre is about, so no problem there. I don't think the songwriting is quite what I would consider top-tier and the 14+ minutes of Beasts of the Night do go by in a bit of blur (partly because that is how it is supposed to go by), but there are bands doing this better. It's early for Bastard Cröss and I'm hoping they have more bile and blackness to spill. Fans of Bat, Midnight, etc. should give this one a whirl.
