Velvet Viper is a band out of Germany that apparently arose from the ashes of Zed Yago, with singer Jutta Weinhold going back and forth between the two bands over the years. I'd never heard of them before their eighth album, Nothing Compares to Metal, showed up in my review queue. With their pedigree, it should not be a surprise that they sound similar to other female-fronted '80s metal bands such as Chastain and Warlock. They play crunchy, traditional metal with Weinhold's throaty shout towering over the top. There are some fairly entertaining tracks like "Invisible Danger," with its upbeat tempo and singable chorus, and "The 4th Part," which has an epic streak not unlike early Rainbow. There are also some quirks to Velvet Viper's approach, nothing too outrageous, though the up-tempo tribal chant on "Blood on the Moon" is really out of sync with the doomy song structure. None of the songs are all that amazing, and certainly nothing to compare with what you got from The 7th of Never or True as Steel, but as a slice of '80s trad metal with female vocals, you can do worse. |
