I've been seeing this name floating around for a while, so it was about time I checked them out. Basically death/thrash, Vantablack Warship is kind of a melting pot of death, thrash, crossover and they also have some hardcore, nu-metal and modern metal leanings. The vocals act accordingly, with way too much shouting (the bad kind) for my taste, though I could see that moving the crowd in a live setting (maybe not the older crowd, but who knows). When the singer tones it down a little, the vocals are actually pretty good. Musically, well, if you've been reading me for a while, you know I'm not fond of nu-metal and modern metal, and I more or less tolerate hardcore. Some passages really remind me of the former, that stuff of nightmares from the late '90s and very early 2000s. I don't like it, but Vantablack Warship at least making it somewhat listenable. When they steer away from that sound, there's some good metal going on here, with some cool, razor-sharp guitar work and the music overall packs a hell of a lot of punch. Not really my cup of tea, but I can see this appealing to those who don't mind the mix on offer here. The album sounds powerful as fuck and, if they can deliver that on stage, I wouldn't want to find myself anywhere near the mosh pit. |
