I've never heard of this band before despite them having been around since the late '90s. They've got a mix of mid-90s second wave, blasting black metal going on here, but also get into the more melodic, slower style of the early 2000s with some passages reminding me of Nocternity. Throw in some much slower and crushingly heavy songs that pin you to your seat, and Gosforth have some nice variety going on here. The vocals are a faint throaty rasp that sounds evil as fuck and so undecipherable that it almost comes off sounding like a distorted static instrument. Taken in pieces, there's nothing black metal aficionados haven't heard before, but taken as a whole, Gosforth have brought together multiple styles and produced a coherent-sounding album that flows very nicely. Good stuff. |
