Review

Decomposing Spells is the third album from Vaultwraith, a band that combines early traditional heavy metal with black metal elements. I reviewed their debut, Death Is Proof of Satan's Power, back in 2017, and heard the influences of several first wave pioneers like Venom, Celtic Frost, and even Mercyful Fate, and I would say that on this third album they are continuing along the same path, perhaps upping the atmosphere with some creepy keyboards here and there as well as even more evil vocals. Songs like "The Sinister Scythe" show off this combination of NWOBHM-inspired riffing and blackened croaks. Some songs are blacker ("Wax Cylinder Apparition") than others ("Carnivorous Coven"), but all are dark, twisted, and occult to the bone. Decomposing Spells is perhaps a bit more focused on those atmospheric elements and less on the metallic energy than the debut and because of that, I find it a little less exciting to sit through, but your mileage may vary. Give it a spin if you need some unapologetic black and roll in your mix.
