Katy Scary has been quietly cranking out material with her main project Klaymore for over a decade, starting off as a traditional power metal project before pivoting to mainly video game covers. This makes her self-titled project a detour from her regular work, as her debut EP Absolute Fucking Terror is more interested in first-wave black metal like Bathory and Hellhammer with some of the sheen of more polished black/thrash like older Skeletonwitch. If that sounds like a recipe for professionally made black/thrash with stronger musicianship than average, that’s because it is, as Katy is a seasoned guitarist who knows how to make knuckle dragging riffs that catch you off guard and uppercut you with killer leads. She also has a strong, nasty rasp with just enough reverb to sell that dirty first-wave approach, and that’s really what this album is overall: a modern tooling of a time when black metal was so primordial it was barely recognizable as anything but really grimy and evil metal. This is a short release, but it’s a fun one displaying tons of promise. |
