This is just a gem. Blood Star seem like a side project of Visigoth guitarist Jamison Palmer, who put together some friends and cranked out this awesome little album of classic Heavy Metal flavored with a hard rock kick. A lot of influences come to mind when listening to this: Warlock, Chastain, Widow, Ignitor, even Stormwitch. You get the idea. The trick to this kind of stuff is there are no gimmicks to get you through, you just have to write good songs with good riffs. Blood Star have put together as solid a debut as anyone ever has, with addictive hooks, a classic recording job, strong performances, and first-rate vocal work from Doro-esque frontwoman Madeline Smith (and Palmer himself on "The Observers"). This is just a class album from the first note, and it has no bad songs, not even any boring ones. You will be singing along with tracks like "Fearless Priestess" and "Cold Moon" before they are even over, and your air-guitar hand will get cramps. A top-ten album for 2023. |
