Deviser are actually a long-running band in the Greek scene, having a history that goes all the way back to 1989. This is the fifth album in their discography, but their first in almost 12 years, so they have been inactive for a while. This is very much in the line of that melodic school of Hellenic Black Metal, though this retains a chunkier, almost Thrash-styled approach in among the intensely melodic guitar work, so this does not remind me much of other Greek Black Metal like Rotting Christ or Varathron. If there's a complaint for me, it's that the sound kind of wanders around—more aggressive here, more melodic here, Middle Eastern influences in bits and pieces, orchestrations added in. The whole doesn't really create a strong sound of its own, more of a mishmash taken from other bands. That said I enjoy this album a lot while it's on, even if nothing sticks.
