This Italian band used to go simply by Spitfire, but as there are several active bands using that name, they now call themselves Spitfire MkIII. Shadows Phantoms Nightmares is their debut album (not counting the music they released as Spitfire) and it is a rocking, upbeat traditional metal affair with slightly gravelly vocals and plenty of crunchy yet melodic guitar work. The band is tight and confident in their performances (they've been around since the '80s, so that tracks) and their songwriting is solid if not spectacular. They remind me mostly of Pretty Maids and their accessible while still heavy style, but I can also hear bands like Sinner and even mid-80s Judas Priest (check out the vocal lines/effects on "Golem of Prague" and tell me it doesn't sound like "Turbo"). Shadows Phantoms Nightmares doesn't do anything fans of '80s heavy metal haven't already heard more times than they can count, but it is still a foot-tapping listen, so if your tastes run in that direction, you can definitely do worse.
