Here's another '80s reissue, this time Sortilège's 1986 album Larmes de héros (the French-language version), that I can remember seeing back in the day. I can tell you exactly why I never bought it then, and that is the cover. I was looking for covers with warriors, dragons, motorcycles, etc., not the head of a Greco-Roman statue. It was a different time then and the only way to find out what an album sounded like was to plunk down some hard-earned money and pray for the best. Cover art was a huge determining factor, and Larmes de héros simply didn't inspire me to part with my money.

Fast-forward to 2022 and I finally get a chance to hear it and realize, I probably would have been happy had I pulled the trigger on the purchase. They have that glorious '80s sound, heavy on the echo and relatively simple on the guitar effects. The playing is tighter than some of their peers and the production a little cleaner, but they aren't a million miles away from fellow Euro bands like Crossfire and Brainfever, though definitely more polished overall. The French lyrics, along with the singer's voice, makes me think of Japanese bands like Loudness and Earthshaker, though on the choruses the high-pitched, double-tracked singing is like what Riot would do so well a couple of years later on Thundersteel. There are no standout tracks to my ears, but they are all quite enjoyable while on. If you've never heard Sortilège and love metal from the '80s, this reissue is the perfect opportunity to hear an underground semi-classic.
