Gateways to Hades is the second full-length from this Serbian band going by the name Terrörhammer. They play a hellishly fast brand of black/thrash, one that leans more in the direction of black but is still quite melodic with an excellent, sharp guitar sound and solid riffs. Normally, I'm a speed freak, but I think Terrörhammer sounds better when they slow down a bit (from insanely fast to only ridiculously fast) on cuts like "At Dawn We Attack," "Midnight Patrol," and "Transylvanian Whore." It's on these songs that Terrörhammer's ear for melody and their songwriting skills shine and you can hear the lyrics and the character of the songs, along with some tasty leads. Songs like "Blizzard of Blood" and "The Interceptor" fall into the "insanely fast" category and are perfectly fine, especially if your black metal lust runs deep, but they are bit faceless after a couple listens. No bother, the whole album is an evil whirlwind sure to please fans of Venom and Motörhead (did you think the umlaut over the "O" in the name didn't mean Motörhead was an influence?) as well as current bands like Midnight and Bewitcher. |
