Finland's Spiritus Mortis has been around since the late '80s according to Metal Archives, but only started putting out full-length albums in the early aughts. The Great Seal is album number five and, like the last one I reviewed, 2016's The Year is One, it's full of standard Solitude Aeturnus/Candlemass doom metal. Slower tempos dominate but aren't exclusive and the reverb is high but not oppressive. They've added a new singer since the last one and he's quite good with a strong, emotive voice which suits the band's style well. The songwriting is also standard, which is not to say bad, but it is going to sound rather familiar to fans of the style. Some tracks channel the doom vibe well ("Skoptsy") while others miss the mark ("Martyrdom Operation"). I really enjoyed the guitar work on "Kristovovery" but once it is over, I don't remember much from The Great Seal other than it was perfectly enjoyable while it was on. If you want some Solitude Aeturnus/Candlemass-inspired doom that hits the right notes and you don't mind it being a bit derivative, The Great Seal is worth checking out.
