I reviewed this Slovenian band's fourth album, Enter the Endless Abyss, back in 2019 and liked its combination of black/thrash elements with more traditional songwriting. This self-titled EP is Vigilance's next effort, and it explores the trad metal and even '70s hard rock realms even more than on the last one. I hear a lot of Iron Maiden's galloping bass and guitar melodies, especially on "Arbogastov Plamen," and even some Jon Lord/Deep Purple keyboards on "Orbis Mundi." The vocals are not harsh, just a gravelly shout in the mold of Chris Boltendahl or Udo Dirkschneider. There's nothing exceptional on Vigilance, but nothing I wanted to turn off, so I would say if Iron Maiden with Chris Boltendahl at the microphone sounds intriguing, give it a spin. |
