An Age Undreamed Of is the debut from this Swedish band that is mining the epic, traditional metal vein, specifically the seam with lyrics based on the works of Robert E. Howard. Lots of big riffs, high-pitched wails, pounding drums and songs about dark magic, monsters, and lands where sword and sorcery are the only laws. Musically, Vanquisher have a good sound with guitars that possess a lot of crunch and drums that really punctuate the beats like war drums. The singer is trying hard, and his high-pitched screams are quite effective. His mid-range is nicely gravelly, but sometimes he's a little overmatched, especially when he sings low notes for an extended time ("Priests of Set"). His vocal lines aren't particularly inspired either, most of the time following the melody and generally not hurting the songs, but doing them no favors either. There's promise on An Age Undreamed Of even if none of the songs really come together the way I think Vanquisher intended. If you are a fan of early Manilla Road, Manowar, Virgin Steele, etc., this is probably a band to put on your radar. |
