Metal Archives lists this California band as "metalcore," but I don’t hear that at all. What I hear is melodic death metal on their second album, Hymns of Blinding Darkness. Their sound combines harsh singing (mainly understandable death shouts) with occasional clean vocals and melodic heavy metal built upon a blend of twin guitars and keyboards. The songwriting is good but not particularly distinctive, so if you’ve heard Amon Amarth, Mors Principium Est, and others, you will have a good jumping-off point. Hymns of Blinding Darkness doesn’t push melodic death metal into new territory or do the sound so well that similarities with other bands become irrelevant, but it is heavy and aggressive enough to make it entertaining while it is on. |
