Fallen Sanctuary is a new entity featuring Serenity vocalist Georg Neuhauser and guitarist Marco Pastorino, who has lent his talents to several bands over the years. A lot of today’s metal musicians have different bands and projects as outlets for their varied musical endeavors and, with Terranova, Fallen Sanctuary’s debut album, Neuhauser has released... a Serenity album. To be fair, it is a really good Serenity album with the kind of ultra-catchy and melodic music that makes power metal fans break out all manner of air instruments. Double-kick drums, sure to set pulses racing, grace the title track, as well as excellent songs like "Bound to Our Legacy," but Neuhauser and Pastorino (along with drummer Alfonso Mocerino and bassist Gabriele Gozzi) don’t skimp on the songwriting when it comes time to slow things down to a mid-pace. "Trail of Destruction" and "No Rebirth" are just as entertaining even though they don’t fly along at the speed of sound. I even like the ballad "I Can Stay" with its beautiful simplicity. Overall, Terranova has a good balance of metallic riffs and melodic keys, but what I like most about it is how honest it is. Serenity writes good music, but they’ve been getting more self-absorbed and self-important since the smashing Death & Legacy, and Terranova is a power metal album plain and simple. Sure, there are serious lyrics, but it never feels like you are getting beat over the head with them or that Neuhauser is leaning too hard into how insightful his lyrics are. Nope, Terranova is a power metal album for power metal fans who like their music fast and melodic and want to be singing the choruses right away. A nice start for Fallen Sanctuary.
