I have to admit I wasn’t sure what I was going to get from a band called Animalize and an album titled Meat We’re Made Of (not to mention the album art), but I’m pleased to say this French band plays kick-ass, ‘80s heavy metal on their debut. They’ve nailed a speedy, melodic sound that tramples anything in its path while remaining very melodic. "Saturday Night Witchcraft" features sweet twin guitar harmonies as does "Samouraï de l’univers," one of the three songs sung in French, a nice detail that gives Meat We’re Made Of additional individuality. Another French-sung cut, "Escorte funèbre," has an epic vibe that works well against the speedier, more immediate songwriting on the rest of the album. Humor is clearly part of the Animalize DNA (again, the cover) on "Pigs from Outer Space," a song that flirts with thrash and is probably my least favorite, though it isn’t bad. It reminds me of Mordred and Ignorance, which is fine if you like that style, but it’s a little out of place among the straight up heavy metal. Definitely not boring, though, have to give Animalize credit there. Overall, this is an up-tempo, energetic metallic romp with solid songwriting and an undeniable ‘80s feel. It is one to check out if you have bands like Traveler, Split Heaven and Tentation in your permanent rotation.
