This is a relatively new band (formed in 2019) from Italy that plays a sort of mashup style of metal that combines traditional, power, and progressive elements along with a trippy, sci-fi, post-rock vibe on their self-titled debut. I’ve listened quite a few times now and I still can’t decide how much I like it. I don’t dislike the album while it is on, but just when some cool heavy part starts to grab me, a trippier part sort of kills my buzz. The sci-fi lyrics sound cool, but like the music, nothing seemed to want to stick in my brain. The album does not stick to a specific formula, but is also not terrible, so kudos to Vanderlust for that. If you forced me to make a comparison, I’d have to say Monsterworks albums like Black Swan Annihilation and Malignment, minus the harsh vocals has some similarities but not a lot else comes to mind, so if you’re looking for something different, Vanderlust might be worth checking out. |
