Third full-length for this band, and their first in 13 years. Mortuus Infradaemoni formed from the remains of the awesome Lunar Aurora, and made for themselves a very different kind of Black Metal sound. This takes the basic sound of the Second Wave bands like Satyricon or Enslaved and takes it in a more epic and orthodox direction, without any kind of genre-crossing or experimental elements added in. Several songs on this are over the 10-minute mark, so you know there is a real attempt to make this as epic as possible. I’m not sure it really worked, as the long songs are mostly just long, rather than standing up as real compositions that are long for organic reasons. I don’t think the sound on this is as good as on their debut, with a weaker guitar tone, but the riffs are still excellent, and despite being rather drawn-out, Immortuos Sum never outstays its welcome. |
