Review

I’ve never been much of a Voïvod fan and, if you read my review of Killing Technology from 2021, you already knew that. I find their early stuff too chaotic, which with Nothingface transitioned into a sound that is too trippy and I honestly haven’t kept up since Angel Rat. With the release of Synchro Anarchy, I thought it was time to give the wheel another spin and, to my surprise, this album clicked. There’s a balance between the chaos and the trippiness that for me anyway is damn near perfect. Snake’s clear but unorthodox vocals are like no other singer I can think of and, to be honest, that can describe Voïvod’s music as well. Sometimes the guitars are off in space while the bass and drums pulsate in perfect rhythm, other times the guitar anchors the vocals and on it goes, working in ways it doesn’t seem like it should. There is melody among the disorder and hell, there’s even a little levity here and there like on the track "Planet Eaters" where Snake encourages the passengers on a ship to Mars to "enjoy your meal, unwind" during their flight to the angry, red planet. I also very much enjoyed the Pink-Floyd-goes-Metal sounds of tracks like "Sleeves Off" and "Holographic Thinking" which combine the Syd Barrett era with the unhinged thrash of Voïvod’s early albums into something strangely accessible yet still full of Voïvod weirdness. The entirety of Synchro Anarchy is a seamless combination of seemingly disparate elements that only the musicians of Voïvod could or would pull off. I can’t speak to any of their other more recent albums, but if you want something that sounds like nothing else, Voïvod is your band, hands down.
