This is a strange one-man band made up of a guy who has done time in oddball Folk Metal band Cnoc an Tursa, so I knew it was going to be off the beaten path. There is more than a little post-metal style in this, as well as prog rock like more modern Pink Floyd, but not really in the way you are thinking. Overall, I find this album surprising, hard to describe, and pretty damned compelling.
The focus here is on the melodic guitars and the strong vocals of Tony Dunn—the guy who composed and plays all of the music here. I would say this kind of reminds me of Enslaved at their most moody, but this has no trace of Viking themes or Viking Metal sounds. The playing is really good, and the compositions hold your attention all the way through, with a lot of time changes, mood shifts, and complexity that is expressed through songwriting and not through showy playing. Overall, a very atypical album, but one I can’t stop listening to.
