I enjoyed the last Vandallus album I reviewed, 2018’s Bad Disease, for its hard rock/heavy metal simplicity and authentic ‘80s sound. When their album 4 showed up in my review queue, I figured I was in for more of the same and that’s true, to a point. Vandallus still plays music that is on the lighter end of the metal spectrum but even more so on 4 than on Bad Disease. There is still a NWOBHM feel to songs like "Parasite" that have a romping, bar band energy and attitude. Other songs like "Motor High City" have a retro ‘80s feel sort of like what High Spirits do, and Vandallus have dialed the time machine back to include ‘70s occult/proto-metal on cuts like "Short Fuse Groove." This one has a distinct UFO feel with a big riff and chorus but more melody than crunch. The album has a good sound, and the songs are all fairly catchy, so I don’t dislike 4 but Vandallus are turning in the hard rock direction this time out and without the same heaviness of past efforts, it isn’t as entertaining. It is an album that is just barely metal, so keep that in mind when making your buying decision. |
