Varnok is a band out of San Francisco that despite nearly 10 years in the trenches doesn't have a full-length album to their credit yet. Anthropogenic is their most recent release, an EP with six songs of thrashy riffs and abusive growls that border on death metal. Musically, there isn't anything here that hasn't been done many times before but there is energy to spare along with plenty of attitude. The guitar and bass are solid, but the drums are thin and artificial, which robs Anthropogenic of power. Varnok's approach reminds me of the late '80s when death metal was starting to separate itself from thrash after the release of albums like Seven Churches and The Force. While not at the same level, it is fans of those albums who should be watching Varnok to see if they can take the next step. |
