Crystal Viper front woman Marta Gabriel obviously loves metal and in addition to her main band's recent album (The Cult) she's also releasing her debut solo album in 2021. The year also seems like an appropriate time to honor the metal and hard rock musicians that paved the way for women in a traditionally male-dominated genre of music and that is just what Gabriel has done. Metal Queens is an album of covers featuring songs originally sung by women in the '80s, from acts any self-respecting metal fan should know to some lesser-known bands. We get faithful renditions of "Mr. Gold" (originally by Doro Pesch-led Warlock), "Light in the Dark" (Leather Leone-led Chastain) and a song that seems to have been written for Gabriel (despite being released the day before she was born), "Metal Queen," originally by Canada's Lee Aaron. She also treats us to songs that might have flown under the radar of fans during a time when there was no Internet or social media to help keep up with new music, but rock nonetheless. "Count Your Blessings" from Malteze, "Bad Attitude" from Hellion and "Rencarnacion" from Santa make me realize just how much good music I missed back in the day. Throughout you have a plethora of crunchy riffs, squealing solos and Gabriel's gritty voice belting out the '80s goodness.

What really separates Metal Queens from other cover albums is how Gabriel put together a track listing of songs that fit together and all flow as if they were meant to be on the same record. It is hard to imagine anyone not knowing Wendy O. Williams, but her song "Goin' Wild" is right at home following Rock Goddess' "My Angel" despite the unlikeliness of those two acts appearing together back in the day. If you like Crystal Viper, there is no reason not to own Metal Queens as it is yet more quality metal from Marta Gabriel and it is a heartfelt up the hammers to all the women of metal.
