Swedish black metal is usually a safe bet and that's certainly true with this album. Åskog play their black metal aggressive and blasting, but they're very big on melody and atmosphere and there's a string doom element going on as well. I like the diversity as the album can fit a number of moods, whether you're looking for some straightforward, take-no-prisoner, all-blasting black metal or something slower and more atmospheric, melodic and creepy and delivered with crushing heaviness. The music is pretty polished, but that doesn't water it down in any way, with the band offering some really effective black metal that takes you on a rollercoaster ride in the darkest depths of hell. |
