This is a real find. Sylvatica bill themselves as "Melodic Folk/Death", and they combine definite pagan/folk sounds with Sci-Fi themes and an album cover that makes this look like Tech-Death. Really, this is definitely in the vein of stuff like Forefather, Moonsorrow, and Finsterforst, with a big sound, symphonic flourishes, and folk-fueled riffs. The vocals are mostly an undistinguished growl, but they often add in a Viking-style choir that really punches things up a notch. The quality of the riffs and songwriting is really first-rate, and the production is crunchy and clear. This is an ambitious album that really should get this band some more attention, as they are definitely ready for the big time. |
