I had to go back and listen to Doomsday for the Deceiver and the previous album, The End of Chaos, before reviewing this album as I never listened to that much Flotsam and Jetsam over the years and wanted to refresh my memory. Surprisingly, a lot of the stuff from Doomsday for the Deceiver was still relatively fresh in my mind. As far as I can remember, I never listened to it all that much in the past. I guess it has some staying power. Anywayyyy...

Blood in the Water mostly sounds more like a heavy/thrash album than an actual thrash album. Their debut was of the "clean thrash" California-style variety (compare that to the German scene at the time), and even 2019's The End of Chaos sounds more thrashy than Blood in the Water. But don't let that deter you. This new album, while not all that thrashy, is a really nice slab of very heavy heavy metal with a thrashy edge and it's really catchy. Some 3-4 songs kind of stuck just after the first listen, the most notable one probably being "Brace for Impact" (no wonder they made a video out of it). The album is very heavy, but also very melodic and the catchiness cannot be denied. I find the vocals to be a major highlight here: very powerful and those vocal lines will stick to you like super glue. No doubt some of the songs here will be a hit in the live setting.

Blood in the Water, sees Flotsam and Jetsam kind of moving a little away from their "clean thrash" roots, but their heavy-handed approach to heavy metal should satisfy the thrasher in you while garnering some interest from the pure heavy metal types who don't mind things a little more extreme. An album that's hard to get off your playlist.
