I've been seeing an increasing number of bands from Indonesia in the past few years, but they're usually all brutal death metal bands. Spellforger chose a different path, but still keep things brutal and aggressive with some pretty cool black/thrash that could send a few more established bands packing. A lot of bands either play it old school or "new school", but Spellforger have a solid old-school foundation, think first-wave black metal mixed with the more aggressive thrash of the first half of the '80s, especially early Slayer, and kick that up a few notches with a more modern sound and often speeding things up to modern extreme metal levels. They even make some of this kind of catchy with a clever use of melodies (that do not water down the music in any way) and some really cool riffs and solos. I get the feeling this is not the last we hear of this band. |
