This is a cool demo of horror-themed old-school death metal from this one-man band that really sounds like it's the work of many. Mostly fast-paced with top-notch abrasive growls and some really fucking cool guitar work that sometimes reminds me of early Slayer but cranked up a few notches, there's a lot to like here in terms of machine-gunning, razor-sharp and raw guitars and some pretty sweet squealing solos here and there—that stuff is memorable after one listen and it's hard not to headbang to this stuff. There's there occasional horror-like vibe and atmosphere creeping up, though not as much as you'd expect given the lyrical themes. If you can't get enough of early '90s-style death metal with laser precision and a lot of attitude, The Gates of Hell is sure to put a smile on your face and some pain in your neck. A shame that this is so short, and hopefully there's more in the oven. |
