Helestios is a British band, and I grabbed the promo for their debut album, Your Pain Tastes Good, after my initial listen had me thinking of Ex Deo. They play a thrashy style of metal with harsh vocals that are quite decipherable after you get used to them. Songs like "Sacrifice" and "Black Storm" don't uncover any new ground, but that's OK as they are entertaining in a riff-heavy, pummeling way. If the rest of the album continued in this vein, I'd probably have scored it higher but on songs like "Downgraded World" and "Return to Baalbek" they alternate the vocals, bringing in some clean singing that is bland and nondescript. Songs that might have had a little oomph with the harsh singing just lay there barely evoking a response. "Back to Where it Starts" is a ballad that might actually have been served by the clean singing, but it's harsh vocals this time and it's a poor fit. I found myself not enjoying Your Pain Tastes Good after a couple of listens due to the poorly paired vocal lines and riffs. The band can play but the style and songwriting both need work.
