Paladine is a Greek band that plays smooth, melodic epic metal on their second album, Entering the Abyss. This isn't the gritty, forlorn music of the current crop of epic metal bands like Eternal Champion, Megaton Sword, etc. It has more of a Dark Forest vibe but with Yngwie Malmsteen's neoclassical sensibilities replacing the folk elements with a distinct power metal streak running down the middle. The vocals took a little getting used to and the singer's voice is not perfect for the style, but he can sing well. The song "Between Gods and Men" has the catchiest hooks and while the rest are good, I didn't hear much that separated one from the next. Entering the Abyss may not be spectacular, but it is a solid metal album from Paladine. |
