I've said before that Cannibal Corpse are a very consistent band. So much so that my intro to this review was going to be pretty much identical to what I wrote for 2017's Red Before Black. Good thing I checked. ;) I've been listening to both albums recently and Violence Unimagined is very much in the same vein as its predecessor, so much so that you could probably mix the songs between the two and none would feel out of place. Haters will say that's true of all their albums, but I wouldn't go that far. The album kicks off very strongly, fast, pounding and heavy and the next 42+ minutes are just as relentless as you'd expect coming from Cannibal Corpse. It's very "even" death metal, not going all over the place but rather just cruising along a road filled with corpses and having a good time. As usual, no frills, just sharp and visceral guitar playing, fast pounding drums with Corpsegrinder's signature growls as the hot sauce. There are some catchier songs on here, "Surround, Kill, Devour" being one that stuck in my head the first time I heard it, which is something one can appreciate from Cannibal Corpse's brand of death metal: it might be gory and punishing, but it doesn't come off as just a wall of mindless sound. There are no surprises here and I didn't expect any. You know what you get with these guys, whether you like them or not. Another good one from this finely tuned death metal juggernaut that shows no sign of slowing down or stopping any time soon. |
