After reviewing Totschläger (A Saintslayer's Songbook), I realized I also had this one that slipped through the cracks. Sure thing is, Abigor went all out with long titles and parentheses for a few albums. Oh well. :) This is not as "in your face" black metal as the follow-up, the band obviously still kicking the tires with a trippier, kind of experimental sound not unlike some of the stuff that irked me with Satanized. But they've refined their approach, and after a few listens I warmed up to the material here. The album is very dark, kind of haunting and absolutely guaranteed to freak the hell out of the neighbours if you crank this up. There's lots of speed and heaviness to be found on the album, which kind of makes up for the weirdness if that's holding you back like it did for me at first. This is a fragile balance between fast second-wave black metal and the weird stuff that some Scandinavian bands went for in the early 2000s, and Abigor made it work on this album. Long story short, this kicks a decent amount of ass and is interesting all at the same time, though you may have to give it a chance to grow on you. |
