After a run from 1981 to 1990, this Florida band broke up for 26 years but got back in the game in 2016 and released their third album, Back from the Dead, in 2020. Metal-Archives lists them as "progressive" but I don't hear too much of that. The music on Back from the Dead is a kind of mix between early '80s Priest and modern power metal bands like Axxis and Mob Rules. The vocalist doesn't have the most powerful delivery, but he does have a bit of grit that gives him some character and he injects a lot of attitude into the songs. "S-Blade Serenade" is a sort of "retold" version of Priest's "The Sentinel" and on "Lydia the Lunatic" guitarists Hal Dunn and Todd Grubbs trade off licks a bit like Tipton and Downing. The rest of the album sticks to the crunchy, Euro-power metal template more or less and the whole album is entertaining though some songs are not all that memorable. If you are in the market for some heavy/power metal that is safe but has a few unique qualities, Back from the Dead is an album worth checking out. |
