We Only Die Once is the third album from Germany's Septagon and unfortunately is a continuation of the dry, monotonous thrash we got on the second album. The drums are really forward in the mix, blasting away in triggered fury, all but burying the guitars in many spots. They come through occasionally, like the tasty riffs at the beginning of "Gardens of Madness," but not nearly enough for me. Markus Becker's vocals are solid as always, but the lyrics are once again clumsily socio-political, and I found them distracting. I've decided that the reason I'm not enjoying Septagon's output since the debut is that they sound a lot like Anthrax, a band I've never overly enjoyed. If Spreading the Disease and Among the Living are staples for you, maybe We Only Die Once will resonate more. |
