Lizard Secrets Part Two – Age of Wonder is an odd name for an album, but it follows Lizard Secrets Part One – Land of the Living, so not that odd in context, perhaps. Anyway, don't let the title put you off this Airborn offering if you are a fan of power metal. On this album the band from Italy continues to combine smooth vocal lines and melodies with double-kick drumming and sci-fi lyrics for another consistently solid album that evokes the heyday of power metal from the early 2000s along with pioneers from the '80s. Speed is power metal's bread and butter, along with hooky choruses, and you can find them aplenty on Lizard Secrets Part Two. "Speed of Life" and "Trouble" are two of the best examples and should have the air drumsticks flying around the room. Songs like "Soultraveller" and the epic closer "Star a Star" are more mid-paced but no less exciting. The one complaint I have about this album, Airborn's sixth, is that the guitars are not as crunchy as I would like, and a lot of their punch has been muted. Songs are that are thoroughly engaging otherwise don't get the blood pumping as much as they could if the riffs really jumped out at you. There's a neoclassical stripe to Airborn's songwriting that can be heard bubbling to the surface, so you have a mix of the sci-fi/power metal of Gamma Ray and Scanner with a bit of Rhapsody in the mix and I think I hear just a hint of Sweet in some of the vocal lines. Lizard Secrets Part Two – Age of Wonder might not get many thrash fans to cross over, but if you enjoy power metal, especially from the early part of this millennium, it's a keeper.
