The Brimstone Clergy is the second EP from Swedish black metal band Serpents. The music is a mix of tremolo picking and more traditional riffing with solid second wave rasping vocals that are satisfyingly dry and evil. There's a thrashy vibe to some of the songs, reaching back to progenitors of the style like Slayer and Celtic Frost. The acoustic passages on The Brimstone Clergy nicely offset the barrage of blackened fury on songs like "End the Slavery of Being" and "Shattered Paradise" but nothing stuck around for long after it was finished. Solid but not amazing black metal from Serpents. |
