Atlantis is the third album from Greece's Fortress Under Siege and the first one I've heard. They play proggy heavy metal that is not over-indulgent in terms of individual performances, rather the songs rely on intricate melodies and vocal lines as parts of complete songs. Singer Tasos Lazaris has a very Dickinsonian delivery which, combined with the band's musical direction, had me thinking of Seventh Son-era Maiden quite often while Atlantis was on (they even have a song called "Seventh Son"). Overall, it is an enjoyable album with no weak spots. The heavy songs are heavy, the choruses have a fair number of hooks and the instruments aren't trying to one up one another. That said, no single track stood out and Fortress Under Siege don't really have a sound distinctly their own. There are worse bands to emulate (or it least be highly influenced by) than Iron Maiden and that's how I am thinking of Atlantis; a really good Maiden-esque heavy/prog record. |
