This is the latest work from this Russian band, whose past output has been highly variable. They have put out an endless stream of splits and EPs over their career since they formed in 2007, but only released a full album in 2015, which was an eclectic progressive, space-rock disc called Manvantara. Technically, this is listed as an EP, even though it is longer than any of their supposed full-lengths, and note I use the plural to refer to the band when it is really just two guys, as this is much more a studio project than a band. All of that said, this is a really excellent album that successfully mixes epic orchestral music with an atmospheric Black Metal sense, not sounding a million miles removed from bands like Dwarrowdelf or Caladan Brood, save that All the Cold are entirely instrumental, with no rasps, chants, or anything else to break up the compositions. I am not normally a huge fan of all-instrumental works, but here the prime focus is on a brooding, epic atmosphere, and the music achieves that handily. If you get into the more keyboardy, epic, moody side of the Black Metal pond, then this should be something you will like. |
