Eternal Majesty were among the numerous bands from the first wave of French Black Metal, but they never got too much recognition compared to many of their contemporaries. I'm unfamiliar with the band outside of this release, which should be plenty familiar to anyone who's familiar with the French scene in any way. That's not to say it's uninteresting, as they have a strong penchant for stirring melodic leads and some superior harsh vocals that range from piercing shrieks to a sort of yell that has a surprising amount of drama to it. However, there's nothing on here you haven't heard before, and you've probably heard it from bands that don't have pedantic song structures and pointless instrumentals to pad out the running time. At only around 30 minutes and with only four real songs among the bunch, I can't say this is an amazing comeback, and if previous releases are similar it may explain why they never caught on, but there's enough quality on here for me to want more from this band. Here's hoping it doesn't take them another 14 years to get the inspiration for another album, hopefully one with more to it than this. |
