Absit Omen is the latest side project from Mass Hypnosia head Karl Rosales, who've gone ahead and released a quick demo with two proper songs plus some snippets from upcoming material. Whereas Karl's main band relies entirely on nonstop Death/Thrash skull bashing, Absit Omen are slower and more melodic, akin to a more stripped-down Kreator. The riffs are hooky, Karl's vocals are a dry as sandpaper snarl, and some of the melodies are killer, but the songs don't really catch fire and kind of sound like they were rushed out the door just to get the name out there. This isn't helped by the production, which has that raw, unpolished demo sound, but not in any way that enhances the music. There's certainly the potential for a really cool band in here, but it's not yet fully realized. |
