Listening to Sylent Storm's debut, The Fire Never Dies, I was prepared to learn they were a "lost" NWOBHM band, but these guys are actually from Portland, Oregon, and formed in 2013. Regardless, the songs on this album have the sound and, more importantly, the feel of the '80s U.K. scene with lots of echo on the vocals, riff-heavy songwriting, and tons of melody. The band can move along when needed but relies on mid-paced tempos driven by hefty bass and solid drumming to power the bulk of their music. Sylent Storm have an epic vibe to the way they perform and even a bit of mystical atmosphere in songs like "Sleeping in the Rain" or the instrumental "Lunar Eclipse" thanks to some ethereal acoustic guitars. I was reminded of the more unique NWOBHM bands like Diamond Head and Pagan Altar while listening to The Fire Never Dies. Sylent Storm are following a slightly different path compared to a lot of other new bands reaching back to the '80s and it sounds good to these ears. |
