Askog just formed this year (early summer) and this is their first demo, available on cassette and digital, but the cassette has a third song that you won't find on the digital release (hint: you want that song). Their brand of black metal has a bit of thrash with kind of a rock 'n' rollish heavy metal vibe here and there which makes the songs here pretty catchy and memorable, especially the title track which has a guitar riff that reminds me of Megadeth circa Rust in Peace and there's even a bit of later Immortal, making for a killer mix. In its short running time, Varg takes you through a rollercoaster of speedy rocking music to slow and heavy, doomy and haunting passages that just crush, only to get back to celebrate your annihilation by speeding up some more. Throw in a few air-guitar-inducing solos for good measure. This is some very well-executed black metal and if the band has more of where this came from, things are looking good for Askog and for my ears.
