Soulcaster is a one-man band out of Belgium that plays an early '80s style of heavy metal that evokes a lot of NWOBHM vibes. The vocals are back in the mix and the production has a low-fi sound like a lot of bands in the '80s had. There's a creepy edge to the lyrics, enhanced by the sound and the faraway vocals which gives the music on Maelstrom of Death and Steel a doomy vibe even though Soulcaster tend to play mid-paced tempos rather than slowing things down. I was reminded of Witchfinder General in places. There are no standout tracks on Maelstrom, but the songwriting and riffing are decent and that gives me reason to think Soulcaster is a band with some potential. |
