Whenever I see a band signed to Nuclear War Now! Productions, I pretty much expect it to be on the higher end of extreme, and Japan's Sex Messiah certainly fit the bill. Eastern Cult of Sodomy, the band's first full-length after many years of EPs and splits, is raw and minimalistic black/death/thrash (just put that in a blender) that sounds demonic as hell. There's absolutely nothing pretty here. This stuff is so raw that it sounds like it came out of a derelict rehearsal room, which just adds to the malevolent atmosphere that can be felt throughout the album (at 26 minutes, it's kind of on the short end of an album, really). The first couple of times I listened to this, it sounded like mindless noise, but more attentive listens revealed quite a bit going on. It's certainly not for the faint of heart or the perfectionist, but those people familiar with this label's roster will likely find something to like here. |
