Here it is, the demo that unleashed the German thrash legends upon the masses. If you're not familiar with Destruction's early albums, and especially if you only know what came out in the past 20 years, you're in for a shock as this sounds nothing like it. Even Schmier's vocals are nothing like what they are today, instead a raw, kind of screechy style that was not uncommon in the more underground thrash bands of the era (unlike, say, Metallica and Megadeth). The music itself is raw as fuck, basic, fast and full of hate and youthful energy. This is so detached from the well-oiled machine that the band would become, it's not funny (told you it sounds nothing like the "new" stuff). It's not a criticism, just a fact, and this shows how a band can evolve while still kicking ass. While this doesn't sound all that extreme nowadays, back in 1984 this would have been up there in terms of extreme metal. This is a nice little piece of thrash—hell, simply metal—history and its simplicity and raw energy make it a fun listen. |
